Among the millions of job displaced Americans, people over 50 may have a particularly tough time finding a new job. These people held jobs all across the economic spectrum from manufacturing and service to finance and engineering. So how can a variety of people, with diverse ages, backgrounds, and skills, retrain themselves to enter the job market with skilled work?

OK, so long after the US economy showed every sign of tanking, the government and TV pundits were still telling us the nation had not entered a recession. Now the stock market seems to be struggling upwards, and so those same people are standing on their soapboxes with glad tidings. They admit that we were in a recession, but tell us that its all over now!

Update: Friday Feb. 6 – Recession-battered employers eliminated 598,000 jobs in January, the most since the end of 1974, and catapulted the unemployment rate to 7.6 percent. The grim figures were further proof that the nation’s job climate is deteriorating at an alarming clip with no end in sight.

New state unemployment benefit filings in the US have jumped to a 26 year high. In addition, the number of people who are staying on the unemployment rolls have also hit record levels. Analysts expect a loss of over 500,000 payroll jobs to be reported soon. That’s half a million new people who are out of work, which would fill up a mid-sized US city.
Financial Crisis and Employment
Have you wondered how the current financial crisis will affect the job market in the US? I imagine that plenty of people on Wall Street will be losing their jobs soon. But will the jobs melt in other places besides lower Manhatten.
More than 600,000 jobs have been lost so far in 2008. That’s so far, because of course, we still have 3 months to go. The government also reported that 9.4 million Americans are looking for work.
Both job hunters and employment agencies are reporting a much more competitive job market these days. Of course this all comes as food and fuel prices seem to be rising daily.
